Chapel Hill Academy’s Extended School Year (ESY) program provides for a full 30 days of additional instruction beyond the regular academic year, during the summer months.
Chapel Hill Academy is proud to offer our students an opportunity to participate in the Extended School Year Program. Eligibility is IEP driven and based on preventing the regression of academic, behavioral, emotional or social skills.
Each summer there is a school wide theme that ties together the academic and social components of our ESY program. The theme this summer will be; A Sustainable Earth Starts with You. Each homeroom will work to better understand how we, as a community, can help to keep our planet healthy for the future. Homerooms will discuss, research, and develop action plans on how to reduce or eliminate the carbon footprint that each generation leaves behind. Activities will include visits to local farms and trips to animal sanctuaries. The students will learn gardening techniques and will collaboratively work to revamp our recycling program. The summer concludes with our annual CHA Carnival and introduction of the new school wide implementation of what will be our newly developed Better Recycling and Refuse Initiative.
There are two programs within the ESY program, Academic Success and Adventure Program (Grades K-8), and Academics/Career Exploration Program (Grades 9-12)
Academic Success and Adventure Program
Students in K-8th grades will continue their course of studies; Language Arts Literacy and Mathematics. Remediation, individual attention, and review of basic skills will be included daily. In addition to maintaining academic and social skills, students will participate in community based activities that will tie into the theme, A Sustainable Earth Starts with You, to better understand our role in taking care of our communities in order to care for our planet. Students will explore advancements in science discussing techniques on how to help keep our planet clean. They will work with our award winning Arts for the 21st Century program to develop creative ways to “get the message out” about sustaining the Earth’s resources. The focus will be reducing waste, which will empower our students to be responsible members of their communities.
Academics and Career Exploration Program
Students in 9th – 12th grades will be able to supplement, remediate and enrich their academic skills through concentrated career investigation. Students will complete an interest inventory, job applications and will research career opportunities. The Chapel Hill Academy career exploration and practical application program will utilize community involvement and field trips to develop ecological methods of preserving the Earth’s resources and explore careers related to sustainability and the environment.
